Day Thirteen - The Oregon Coast Depoe Bay

Because we are staying at this campground another day, we had no reason to get up early or set an alarm. I woke at 7:30 am and just laid there listening to the sound of the waves crashing and thinking that last night might very well have been the best night's sleep I've ever had. I logged on to the wifi and made several updates to this travel blog. I began uploading all of the photos that were back-logged to be added to the text travel journal. Pretty soon hubby was up and making coffee. The kids seemed to sleep forever, but when they finally woke, we ate breakfast and headed down to the beach for a morning walk. We walked down the beach quite a ways and explored all of the little things washed up on the shore. We found some interesting sea weed, creatures, rocks, and scenery. We liked the houses that lined the beach on both sides of the campground, and took turns being brave enough to let the freezing surf wash up over our feet. After about 20 minutes, my feet were entirely numb, so we went back to the rv and sat outside doing various activities. We all bundled up with blankets and sat outside to watch the ocean. Our daughter worked on her summer AP assignments, hubby and our son watched the horizon for whales through his binoculars, and I alternated between watching the view and uploading photos. We also made lunch and ate it outside while we watched people playing on the beach. At one point there were several surfers in the water and all of a sudden I heard a very distinct bark. A sea lion swam in between the surfers and popped his head above the water and was barking at them! The surfers looked stunned and just sat there while the sea lion dove down a few times and then went away. It was pretty cool!

It seemed to be getting colder after lunch, so we went it and started watching a movie. I caught up on uploading photos too. About half way through the movie, I looked out the window and noticed that it was sunny outside, so I jumped up and said, “Pause the movie – we’re going outside!”

It had gotten much warmer and the sun was shining, so I grabbed my camera to take some photos. We also decided that we would have a campfire on the beach that night, so we began collecting some supplies and wood for the fire, claiming a spot with our chairs. Meanwhile hubby started talking to the wife from the family with the Winnebago next to us. She was digging a trench to let some water out of an area at the back of the beach with poor drainage. She was determined to get the water down the beach to the ocean. The only problem was, the trench was going to be 50 yards or so long – that’s a lot of digging with a kiddie bucket. So, of course, hubby started helping her, lol. He’s always been a beach hole digger, so this was right up his alley.

As we dug, we started talking to the family who's from Bend, Oregon – Gene, Sarah, and their three daughters – Pearl, Bea, and Elsie – and their Great Dane, Henry. (Apologies if I misspelled any of those names!) They were a riot. We had so much fun with them digging that trench all day – ok, well hubby and our son dug, I supervised and took photos, and our daughter babysat the three little girls. It was such a great day and so much fun getting to know them. We were out there for hours with them – and it was past dinner time – so we decided to make chicken burrito wraps in foil packets over the fire. We took all of our fire, dinner, and s’mores supplies down to the beach and started a fantastic fire on the beach. Our neighbor family joined us for s’mores and I texted Sarah the link to this website and our home’s website as well. She’s also a designer and was interested in our sustainable home. As the evening wound down and the little ones were getting tired, we called it a night and began packing up just as someone down the beach let off some fireworks. A campfire and fireworks on the beach – you can’t get more prefect than that!

After we picked up all of our supplies and took them back up to the RVs, we said our goodbyes to our new friends and headed for the heated shower house again. The shower felt even better the second night. After our showers, we blitz cleaned the RV and got it road-ready again. We’d be heading out early in the morning to head to another new state: Washington!
